FAQs
How does the whitening procedure work?
First, a protective cover is put over your lips and gums leaving only your teeth exposed. Next, we apply the whitening gel to your teeth where it will remain for 20 minutes. A special lamp is used in combination with the whitening gel to remove stains from your teeth. More gel is applied every 20 minutes. The entire process takes about 1 hour.
Is Teeth whitening permanent?
No. Certain foods, drinks, and tobacco will still stain your teeth - even following the procedure. Avoiding items like coffee, carbonated drinks, soy sauce, pasta sauce and red and white wine can help you maintain your newly whitened teeth. Brushing your teeth properly and having professional cleanings on a regular basis can also help to maintain the whitening of your teeth.
is teeth whitening painful?
Teeth whitening can cause sensitivity to the teeth. Some patients experience little to no sensitivity, while other patients may need to limit the strength and time of the bleaching to avoid sensitivity. To lessen the feeling of sensitivity, using Sensodyne toothpaste is recommended one week before the procedure.
can i do teeth whitening on cavities and crowns?
No. The treatment cannot whiten any foreign material like dental veneers, bonding/composite or any non-natural tooth restoration. It is designed to whiten only tooth enamel. It is better to whiten your teeth before having any dental work done, so you can match that dental work to the new shade of your teeth. The same goes for a crown. You want to get a crown that blends with the color of your newly whitened teeth.
how often should i whiten my teeth?
We recommend that you come in for a treatment every six months.
Do i have to do anything special after the procedure?
Do not eat any colorful foods or beverages the following week since they could stain your teeth. Avoid eating things like spaghetti with marinara sauce, red wine, ketchup, or blueberries. Do not drink wine coffee or tea. If you absolutely can’t go without it, it is imperative that you immediately drink water afterward so that residue doesn’t sit on your teeth and you’re washing it away with water. You can also use a straw to be more careful. After 5 days, the new color of your teeth is locked in.
